Statutory guideline: AS 47.24.010 (a)

A mandatory reporter "who in the performance of their professional duties, has reasonable cause to believe that a vulnerable adult has been abused shall, not later than 24 hours after first having cause for the belief, report the belief."

This slide gives you the statutory language explaining when you are to provide the mandatory report.

Please notice that all you have to have is the “belief” that someone has been or will be harmed. As a mandatory reporter you do not have to have all of the facts and you are not to “conduct your own investigation.” You are only expected to have enough information to determine whether someone has been harmed. A person listed as a mandatory reporter who reports to the Long Term Care Ombudsmen or to the Department of Health and Social Services that a vulnerable adult had been abused, neglected or exploited in an out-of-home care facility is considered to have met their duty to report.
