Americans with Disabilities Act

Passed in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that public and private entities:
- Have accessible facilities, and
- Do not discriminate against people with disabilities

It is important to note here that disabilities fall into two categories: visible and invisible. Visible disabilities are obvious. For example, you can see that someone uses a wheelchair or has cerebral palsy. With invisible disabilities, though, you cannot see that some may have seizures, a learning disability or an addiction. Worth noting, too, is that the Americans with Disabilities Act does include people who are recovering from substance addiction. However, a person who is actively abusing a substance is not covered.
